It’s no surprise that RecycleBankers have been dramatically reducing  their impact on the planet through recycling and being rewarded for their efforts. Now, we’ve taken things to the next level and partnered with ActiveCause. Households can increase their positive impact on the planet in a whole new way; through charitable giving. ActiveCause was founded to make it easier for interested people to locate, research and support non-profit organizations – and to reduce the amount of time and money organizations spend fundraising.

Through our partnership with ActiveCause, you can donate your RecycleBank Points for cash donations to over 50 organizations and charities, such as the Nature Conservancy, Oxfam-America, Save Darfur Coalition and the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Imagine your plastics, glass bottles, cans and newspapers becoming funding for worthy causes that make a difference to you and your community.

Donating has never been so easy. Just log into your account at RecycleBank.com and go to the ‘Redeem’ section. Once there, click on ‘Donations’ and you will find categories representing dozens of local, national and international charities and organizations that are powered by ActiveCause-everything from environmental causes, health and medical organizations, educational institutions, social service associations, animal care organizations and local charitable groups.  Once you’ve determined that the ideals of a particular organization are in sync with your own views, add the donation to your shopping cart.  RecycleBank will make a cash donation for Point donation.

You do the recycling and earn the Points. ActiveCause does the research and arms you with in depth information, making it easy for you and your family to learn about charitable giving from participating organizations. RecycleBank pays the cash to the charity from your Point donation. It’s that simple.

“RecycleBank Reward Points can now help a variety of environmental causes, health and medical organizations, educational institutions, social service associations, animal care organizations and local charitable groups,” said Ron Gonen, co-founder and CEO, RecycleBank. “Through our partnership with ActiveCause, our members have access to a growing number of non-profits that accept donations through our program.”

“We’re fostering a community of people who want to integrate giving into their everyday lives,” said Craig Alberino, founder and CEO of ActiveCause.  “With the information provided by ActiveCause at their fingertips, RecycleBank users can seamlessly and painlessly support the causes they believe in.”

“RecycleBank and ActiveCause are perfect partners, allowing members to ‘do good’ twice.  First, by helping conserve precious resources through recycling. Second, members can help the world around them by donating their Points to help important causes,” said Gonen.

We welcome ActiveCause to RecycleBank’s  family of Partners.

NASDAQ opening bell

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

ActiveCause founders Peter Carzasty and Damion Hankejh took part in a historic event as part of the opening bell at NASDAQ on Broadway at 43rd Street in Times Square. The occasion was to celebrate the release of the new book, “Do Your Giving While You Are Living” by Edie Fraser and Robyn Spizman.

In a time when the financial services industry musters public suspect, and the commercial economy amazes the general public by adding to a “gloom & doom” narrative daily,  it was to the credit of NASDAQ to draw attention to the timeless and personal selfless act of giving back.

It was refreshing during the pre and post bell-ringing reception to share and connect with some truly inspiring individuals who connect through the simple act of giving back.  We had the opportunity to share some thoughts with: Feed The Children, GoodSearch, The National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) and in particular, to Zane Groshella of AmieStreet.com and Jeannette Pai-Espinosa of National Crittenton Foundation (based in Portland OR).

Thanks to Casey Golden of SmallAct.com who coordinated nearly 30 organizations devoted to nonprofit and charitable concerns for this event.

Increasing Portfolio Value Through Social Responsiblity – Davidoff event

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

As a prelude to our Beta launch, ActiveCause hosted its first event at Davidoff of Geneva in New York City. The evening featured a lively panel discussion on the issues of social media, social responsibility and philanthropy as it pertains to VC firms and their portfolio companies.

Moderated by Bryan Walsh of Time Magazine, panelist included: myself, Matt Tucker, President of RecycleBank (and incidentally, one of AC’s first corporate partners) and Will Porteous, General Partner of RRE Ventures

Pre-post panel mingling include topical discussions on the evening’s agenda, especially as it pertains to the currently economic situation. It was pointed out that in 2007, philanthropic giving in the United State grew to over $300 billion, and recent survey ,indicate roughly 70% of individuals are considering maintain or slightly increasing their giving in the coming year.

The “Obama Factor” naturally was topic of mind for the panel as well. Consensus was the new administration will have an influence on both individual giving and within the corporate sector. Overall the panel agreed the new tone will influence not only a call for increased volunteerism, but the wave of concern will carry over to the philanthropic sector (both individuals and corporate) as well.

In addition to representatives from the VC world including Genesys Partners, ActiveCause brought together an interesting mix of individuals from the non-profit and private philanthropic sectors including Stephen Kong, of Modern Luxury Publishing, his wife, Rebecca who runs her own gallery, Artware in Greenwich Village, Les Christoffel of Green Drake Corporation and Susan Sayre Batton, former Deputy Director of LA’s Hammer Museum.

The evening concluded with many indulging in a sampling of a hand rolled cigar, as my fellow partners Damion Hankjeh, Peter Carzasty and board advisers John Rovegno and Liesl Leach lifted a glass to the first of many milestones in the evolution of ActiveCause.

Thanks to Bryan Walsh for moderating and the Davidoff team for pulling together a great event.
